The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Nuclear Energy Management School recently concluded its comprehensive training program in Accra, Ghana. Held from March 31 to April 11, 2025, the two-week program was jointly led by Mr. Ashok Ganesan of the IAEA and Dr. Archibold Buah-Kwofie of the Nuclear Power Institute at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (NPI-GAEC).
The program brought together young professionals from various African countries within the nuclear sector to enhance their understanding of nuclear energy management fundamentals. This initiative aligns with the IAEA’s commitment to supporting Member States in developing robust nuclear energy capabilities.

Program Focus and Objectives
The Nuclear Energy Management School is designed specifically for emerging professionals in countries that are either planning to develop or are currently implementing nuclear energy programs. The curriculum provides participants with essential managerial and technical competencies required to advance national nuclear energy strategies.
A distinguishing feature of the school is its comprehensive coverage of the entire nuclear energy lifecycle. Participants received expert instruction on critical areas including nuclear licensing and regulation, energy policy development, safety culture implementation, fuel cycle management, and the integration of safety, security, and safeguards protocols. The program also explored applications of nuclear technology in various scientific fields.

Educational Approach and Activities
The school employed diverse educational methodologies to ensure effective knowledge transfer, including:
- Lectures from industry experts, academics, and IAEA specialists
- Interactive panel discussions on current nuclear energy challenges
- Technical visits to relevant facilities
- Collaborative group projects addressing real-world scenarios
- Case studies examining best practices and lessons learned
- Formal assessments to evaluate understanding
- Networking opportunities to build professional connections

Participants benefited from the IAEA’s e-learning platform, which facilitated access to specialized training materials and resources. The program emphasized international perspectives on nuclear energy management while highlighting specific aspects relevant to implementing national nuclear strategies.
Practical Experience and Expert Engagement
A highlight of the program was a comprehensive tour of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission’s facilities, including its research reactor. This practical experience complemented the theoretical components of the training.

Throughout the school, participants worked in teams on various projects and exercises designed to apply their learning to realistic scenarios. The program featured lectures from distinguished experts, including the Former Director General of GAEC and the Executive Director of Nuclear Power Ghana. Several IAEA specialists also contributed their expertise through both in-person and virtual sessions.
The successful conclusion of this Nuclear Energy Management School represents an important step in building capacity for nuclear energy development across Africa, supporting the continent’s growing interest in nuclear technology for sustainable energy solutions.
