As the world continues to embrace clean, sustainable, and reliable energy solutions, Russia’s state nuclear energy corporation, Rosatom, has emerged as a key player in Africa’s energy landscape. With its cutting-edge nuclear technology, vast experience, and commitment to global development, Rosatom is making significant strides in transforming the energy sector across the African continent.
Rosatom: A Global Nuclear Powerhouse
Founded in 2007, Rosatom has grown into one of the largest and most influential nuclear energy companies in the world. With expertise in all aspects of nuclear power—from reactor construction to research and fuel supply—Rosatom is dedicated to advancing nuclear energy as a viable solution for addressing global energy challenges. With its involvement in over 20 countries, Rosatom is now looking to extend its influence into Africa, a region eager to boost its energy capacity and address growing power demands.

Africa’s Energy Challenges
Despite the continent’s vast natural resources, many African nations face severe energy shortages, with more than 600 million people lacking access to electricity. Africa is also heavily reliant on fossil fuels, which are costly, unsustainable, and environmentally damaging. To meet the rising demand for energy while ensuring sustainability and reducing carbon footprints, African countries are increasingly turning to nuclear power. This is where Rosatom’s expertise becomes invaluable.
Rosatom’s Role in Africa: Building the Future
Rosatom’s relationship with Africa is one marked by collaboration and long-term commitment. Through strategic partnerships, Rosatom is helping African nations embrace nuclear energy as a part of their future energy mix. Here are a few key ways Rosatom is making an impact:

1. Nuclear Power Plants and Development Projects
Rosatom’s flagship project in Africa is the El-Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant in Egypt. The plant, which will consist of four Russian-made VVER reactors, will have a total capacity of around 4,800 MW, supplying clean and stable energy to the Egyptian grid. Scheduled to begin operations in the late 2020s, this project is a significant milestone in Egypt’s nuclear ambitions, supported by Rosatom’s experience and technological know-how.
Beyond Egypt, Rosatom has been actively involved in negotiations with other African countries, including South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, and Zimbabwe, to explore the potential for future nuclear power plants. Rosatom has proposed several partnerships to bring nuclear energy to these nations, focusing on both large-scale reactors and smaller, modular nuclear solutions that can be tailored to specific national needs.
2. Training and Education: Empowering the Next Generation
One of the standout aspects of Rosatom’s commitment to Africa is its focus on capacity building. Through the Rosatom Technical Academy and specialized training programs, Rosatom is helping to develop a new generation of nuclear energy professionals in Africa. The company has already provided scholarships to students from various African nations to study nuclear engineering, and it is setting up specialized training centers to equip local experts with the skills needed to manage nuclear energy projects.

3. Nuclear Research and Fuel Supply
In addition to building nuclear power plants, Rosatom also plays a key role in supplying fuel and conducting nuclear research. The company provides uranium enrichment services and has set up partnerships with African nations to enhance their research capabilities in nuclear science. These partnerships help African countries build the infrastructure needed for safe and efficient nuclear power generation.
4. Boosting Energy Security and Sustainability
For African countries, nuclear power offers a solution to energy insecurity, providing a steady, low-carbon source of electricity. With nuclear plants, countries can diversify their energy mix, reduce reliance on expensive and polluting fossil fuels, and improve energy access for millions of people. As Rosatom brings its world-class technology to the continent, it is helping African nations work toward achieving their sustainable development goals (SDGs), especially those related to clean energy (SDG 7) and climate action (SDG 13).
